Punch Cocktails

The collection of punches, as well as the word punch itself, was created in India and is translated from the Hindi as the number five or an opened palm. In its native land, the favourite drink of British troops was prepared from five ingredients: tea, lemon juice, sugar, water and local alcohol distilled from rice or the pith of a palm tree. In the 17th century, at the height of the East Indian Company, the recipe for punch reached England and then spread around Europe and, merging with national drinks, started to be prepared with various forms of alcohol.
