The collection of punches, just like the word "punch" itself, traces back to India: in translation from Hindi, it means the number 5, or the opened palm of the hand. In its homeland, the favorite drink of British soldiers was made of five components: tea, lemon juice, sugar, water, and a local homemade liquor made from rice and hearts of palm. In the 17th century, during the East India Company's heyday, the punch recipe first crossed over to England, then made its way around Europe and began to be made with various national alcohols.
